Even if your player plays this with an .mp3 file extension (my default one does not), this is not an mp3 file. MP3 are MPEG-1/-2 Layer 3 files.
This is a MPEG-4 file with an AAC-LC audio stream (~63Kbps stereo 22,05 KHz), an embedded cover and embedded chapter data. Thus the appropriate file extention is .m4b :)
With the file extension changed to m4b it behaves like any regular m4b audio book, and does not require the accompanying cover/cue files.

Open a cmd window and rename to replace mp3 with m4b and it starts to behave normally
