Tension grips the country as the nuclear talks with Iran start to go poorly. This is largely ignored by the populace, and the threat of war goes unheeded.
Blake has lived his life through hard work and his blog - Back Country J. He’s an off-grid homesteader, blogger, and author. He has the life that preppers dream of, and he never knows it. As an on-again-off-again handyman, he learns how to fix everything in his life except loneliness, until he meets Sandra.
Sandra is an army veteran who has caught his attention, and she’s also the preacher’s daughter. Sparks fly the first time they meet, and the shy hermit asks her out on a date.
Follow the couple as they try to survive raiders, hunger, and human nature when the balloon goes up after an EMP is set off.

First of all, thank you Dallis24 for releasing more and more great audio books in the SHTF/post-apocalyptic genre! You are easily one of the best uploaders to this site and deserve all of the praise that you get!
unfortunately, this particular novel is a miss for me. maybe I’m just tired of the author pumping out same bland fiction. let me explain:
other than the nuclear bit, the setup is almost identical to “One Man’s Opus” also by the Craven: shy reclusive Amazon novel writer hits it off with a spunky girl that owns a storage locker business, they go on a camping trip and… nothing really happens –
there’s no SHTF in the entire first book about SHTF! (at the end of the book the county plows his “bugout property” driveway..yeah). That one was basically a boring and cringe love story with a really smart dog added in for more lazy attempt at emotional string pulls.
This one is not much different, although to author’s credit EMP actually happens in an EMP novel this time. Now the Amazon writer is an off-grid blogger and the spunky small business owner is a spunky army veteran girl. The rest is more or less the same too: long sections about nothing, very little meat or direction in the story, cardboard cutout characters; the primary focus again seems to be young man with poor social skills scoring a great girl, but taking forever to do it. I guess despite his best efforts, the author just can’t write a decent romance novel.. but god damn it he keeps trying, forcing a post-apocalyptic setting as a backdrop. The fact that it’s narrated by Kevin Pierce just adds to the drag that this book is. He doesn’t have a bad voice for books where the protagonist is over 50, but his nasal low guttural drawl voicing young men and women in love just doesn’t work at all here.
Very few things beat something like One Second After, but there are plenty other books (most available from Dallis24) that are way better than this. Going Home series, Borrowed World series, New World series and many others are way better than anything Boyd Craven can shlop together for a quick amazon dollar.
